What started over 10 years ago as a simple South African braai blog has grown into something much bigger - a lifestyle brand built around fire, food, family and culture.
I originally created Boertjie Braai purely as a passion project. It was simply a place to share recipes, braai ideas and the culture I grew up with in South Africa, where a braai is far more than cooking meat over coals - it’s about bringing people together.
One of the biggest reasons I started Boertjie Braai was to support local butchers. I’ve always believed that some of the best stories, products and knowledge come from the people behind the counter at your local butcher shop.
Over the years, I visited different butchers, braaied their meat, shared their products and told the stories behind their businesses. From specialty cuts and homemade sausages to traditional recipes and family history, it was about celebrating the people who keep real food culture alive.
Since moving to Australia with my family, I’ve realised how much Aussies and South Africans actually have in common. We both love the outdoors, good food, good humour and spending time with family and mates. The difference is simply the style of fire we stand around.
Boertjie Braai is now being rebuilt to share South African braai culture with Australia - while continuing to support local butchers, small businesses and quality products made by passionate people.
Here you’ll find:
- Braai recipes and cooking tips
- The best local Butchers
- South African-inspired food and flavours
- Outdoor cooking content
- Braai gear and product recommendations
Most importantly, this brand is about community.
It’s about slowing down for a few hours around the fire.
It’s about teaching the next generation how to cook over coals.
It’s about supporting local businesses.
It’s about laughter, stories, smoke in your clothes and making memories with the people around you.
Whether you’re a South African missing a taste of home, or an Aussie wanting to experience braai culture for the first time, you’re welcome here.
So grab a chair, light the fire and join us around the braai.
